"Gunsmoke Reruns"

(Written 8/16/11 by ChristopherK2 for the Nice Marylanders Over 35 Blog)

I've recently taken to watching reruns of that ancient tv western series, "Gunsmoke," while eating lunch. It's a fine series, and I like the characters, actors, and even the plots (based on the Boy Scout Laws, near as I can tell).

But I watch them mainly because I've run out of better ideas. I've gone thru many seasons of DVD's of my fav series. But at the rate of one or two episodes a day, I went thru them quickly. That won't be a problem with "Gunsmoke," of course, because of its 300+ episodes in syndication.

I also have to fill the dinner hour and the weekends. I've run thru most everything for those slots.

I've heard that Netflix is good for that, but it sounds complicated to hook up as far as downloading them off the internet. And their mail-in thing seems like a hassle.

So, if anyone has any comments or suggestions, I'd sure appreciate them.

Christopher

Hey, not sure who your server is, but the On Demand feature is great for catching up or finding new shows to watch. I have watched shows with this media, that I didn't think I'd like while they were actually on in the present time..anyway, just a thought...BTW, I liked Bonanza better...Pa, Little Joe...lol.

I've only recently begun to check out our On Demand stuff. It seems to exist mainly to sell movie rentals, which I think is reprehensible considering how much I already pay them for various services (including premium ones).

Pamela recently pointed out that it includes reruns of Larry David's show, "Curb Your Enthusiasm." That seems interesting, so I intend to watch it sometimes. But I don't think the service includes more than a year's worth of shows.

As to "Bonanza," I just watched my first episode of that in more than a LOT of years. It comes on at 2 p.m. after two episodes of "Gunsmoke." I'm usually westerned out by then. LOL

Thanks!

One aspect of "Gunsmoke" I enjoy is the appearance of guest stars who became famous many years later. Today's episode, for example, included Tom Skerrit (20 years before "Top Gun"), Bruce Dern (12 years before "Coming Home"), Robert Urich (almost 20 years before "Vega$"), and Julie Sommars (20 years before "Matlock").

But "Gunsmoke" also sometimes featured a then-currently famous star. This episode starred Bette Davis ("The First Lady of Film"), almost 30 years after her Best Actress Oscar for "Jezebel" and just four years after her remarkable star turn in "What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?"

BTW, at one point, Bette Davis's character seriously bitch-slapped Miss Kitty. Few could bitch slap better than Bette...

Thanks, I'll have to check that out soon. I can see that they have such fine series as Maverick; Have Gun, Will Travel; and How The West Was Won.
